« An adventure like this is something you can’t refuse! »

A passionate oceanographer, Julien GUILLET plunged head first into the ABYSSA adventure, “a scientific, entrepreneurial and human adventure” that fulfills his need to understand and his taste for challenge.

Like many oceanographers, Julien GUILLET’s passion for the marine environment comes from his childhood.
A childhood and adolescence spent in Charente Maritime, multiplying nautical activities, from surfing to sailing and scuba diving. From the game, is born naturally the curiosity to understand the marine environment, its physical and biological functioning. It is therefore quite logical that Julien GUILLET goes to La Rochelle after a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography, which will culminate in obtaining a DEA (post-graduate diploma) in Sustainable Use of Coastal Ecosystems. A deliberately generalist orientation (involving biological, geological and physical aspects, covered at the same time) for the naturally curious person, who wished to have a global understanding of all the elements that affect the marine environment.

From his studies comes a strong interest in tropical environments, warm waters that he discovers while diving in the Red Sea, a thermal shock more than pleasant for this accustomed to the depths of the Atlantic.
Following his DEA, Julien GUILLET joined CREOCEAN for an internship, still in La Rochelle, at the time directed by Jean-Marc SORNIN, and followed by a first contract on environmental impact studies.
But the call of the sea is being heard.
Julien GUILLET has a desire to go elsewhere (and in hot water!) to satisfy his passion for surfing and scuba diving. As he looks out over Indonesia, the country of Cocagne, Michel COLINET, who manages the CREOCEAN office in the West Indies, called him to his side.
A rich and varied marine environment, splendid sites, a new and exciting professional challenge… Julien GUILLET did not need to think too much to accept the proposal. For 3 years, he surveyed the Caribbean, developed the agency’s client portfolio, and won tenders in the West Indies, but also in Tahiti and Reunion Islands. A crush for this island in the Indian Ocean led him to consider creating a CREOCEAN agency and setting up his family there… But once again, Michel COLINET, now based in Tahiti, offered him to join him there. A new opportunity that is not to be refused!
In 2008, accompanied by his wife, Julien headed for Papeete, where he took on the position of Project Manager, then Head of Agency when Michel COLINET left.
But as the years went by, a desire for something new, challenge, entrepreneurship arose… Julien wanted to start a new professional adventure, why not under the sign of entrepreneurship, but always in connection with the environment.
After a period of reflection and market research, born in 2019 the company NEOSEA, created with a former college of CREOCEAN.
Anchored in the operational, NEOSEA is a design office that offers on the one hand measurements and a global understanding of the mechanisms that govern coastlines for development purposes, and on the other hand, an engineering service dedicated to the construction of work (landings, etc.).
A new professional challenge that does not prevent Julien GUILLET from keeping in touch with the “old hands” of CREOCEAN, including Michel COLINET of course, but also Jean-Marc SORNIN, Jean-Damien BERGERON… And thus to follow the ABYSSA adventure…

The continuation is easily guessed: French Polynesia being a crucial area for the deep sea, it became essential for ABYSSA to have an on-site representative, who perfectly knew the ground and the interlocutors, and who was able to develop fruitful business relationships… And of course, in the event of signature of contract, to manage logistics, teams, equipment, etc.

With his experienced profile and his detailed knowledge of the Tahitian network, Julien GUILLET has the perfect profile. The collaboration thus began informally, before becoming a reality in February 2022.
For Julien GUILLET, developing ABYSSA in French Polynesia is a new challenge that matches his ambitions: “First of all, there is the human interest, I work with people I know well, with whom I enjoy working together. It is also an exciting field of activity, especially here in Tahiti, where the reef plunges abruptly, the abysses are at the foot of our islands, our homes, but remain a field that we know very little about and which will be exciting to discover. Joining the ABYSSA team means participating in a real adventure, both scientific, entrepreneurial and human, and taking up a real challenge, because I wish ABYSSA to quickly become a key player in deep-sea exploration!”.
