The magazine “Environnement Nouvelle-Calédonie“ looks at the birth of ABYSSA, from the MELODI challenge to its establishment in 2020 in Noumea.
This article recalls the history of the creation of ABYSSA SAS and its subsidiary ABYSSA New Caledonia SAS, structures that aim to operate autonomous deep-sea vehicles in the 3 oceans. The company’s philosophy is explicit, as are the objectives which are to draw up inventories of the underwater sea-bed heritage of 5 types: a) heritage of forms and facies, b) geological and mineral heritage, c) biological heritage, d) hydrological and energetic heritage, (e) cultural heritage and underwater objects. The text specifies two deployment bases: a) that of Anglet in the Basque Country in mainland France for the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean and b) that of Nouméa in New Caledonia for the Pacific. Details are given on the two types of tools used: a) autonomous deep-sea vehicles acting alone and b) a fleet of drones consisting of a master drone and followers up to 6. The list of the various onboard sensors is also provided.
The magazine’s publisher, AZURMEDIA, is a member of the Maritime Cluster of New Caledonia alongside ABYSSA.
